Back To School With Michael Kirby

Back To School With Michael Kirby

Back to School With is... well, back!

Meet the politician who spent his teenage days selling late-night pancakes (and now spins the decks).

Meet the radio newsreader who had a knack for always getting out of class.

Meet the screenwriter who was once a child gymnast.

In the second season of our webseries 'Back to School With', we interview some more fascinating Aussies about their school days, to find out how they landed their dream careers and the obstacles they faced along the way.

In the fourth episode of Season 2, we catch up with The Honourable Michael Kirby, former High Court judge and author of A Private Life. He shared what it was like to attend school at the end of World War 2 and amidst the White Australia policy, while also keeping his homosexuality a secret at a time in which it was considered a crime to be gay.

On the last point, he says, "there are still some people in Australia who would like to go back to that era, but it’s over."

"It’s changed because people are standing up and they say, 'This is me, this is who I am. Get over it.'"
