Azealia Banks Suspended From Twitter After Tweeting Racist, Homophobic Abuse At Zayn Malik
It was always going to end this way.
Twitter has decided, “You know, maybe Azealia Banks’ constant barrage of racist and homophobic language isn’t totally chill?” Following a recent garbage Tweet-stream directed at Zayn Malik (which we won’t share here, because it’s the worst), Twitter has officially, finally suspended her account. Over at Buzzfeed, you can see how this whole thing went down. (Massive language warning.) Earlier this week, she was similarly booted from the UK ‘Born & Bred’ Festival for Tweeting racist and homophobic remarks in Malik’s direction. Azealia’s reps are keeping quiet, presumably because they are exhausted from having the hardest job in the world. Banks, however, took to Instagram to comment on the suspension. In a post entitled “Crakkas got Me again !!!!!”, Azealia writes, “REALIZE that I insulted Indians , Pakistani, black folk… And my Twitter didn’t get suspended until I said ‘WHITENESS IS A MENTAL ILLNESS’”. What she said was disgusting. I understand that and I in no way condone her actions... but don't you think it's a little bit strange that she was suspended?
There are literally thousands other people on twitter who say abhorrent things. There are literally thousands other people on twitter who make abhorrent threats and even follow through on them: #makeamericawhiteagain, #whiteisright, #killallmuslims, anybody? There are other non-black celebrities like Tila Tequila, Donald Trump, Anne Coulter, Piers Morgan, Miley Cyrus and Iggy Azalea and so and so forth that have also tweeted extremely racist things but none of them were suspended for them.
In this situation Azealia Banks has been a victim of anti-black racism, but its gone overlooked;
I think we can use this situation to open up a dialogue on the consistent silencing of black people - women especially, and horizontal aggression and misplaced anger with Social Justice movements.
While I totally agree that people are being hard on her specifically bc she's a black woman, I think a lot of Banks getting taken down in this case has to do with her launching very personal attacks. She wasn't just tweeting slurs, she was tweeting them AT people and threatening them etc. Nasty KKK racists can get away with their awful stuff under "free speech" when they keep it to themselves and just make generalized horrible statements, unfortunately...
You said it all!
She shouldn't be rude to another artist that has done nothing to you!!
