Aussie Teen Almost Smashes The Rubik's Cube Record (Is Still Seemingly Superhuman)

It’s been a hell of a week for Australians almost doing things - or having things done to them - abroad.

In the spirit of Mick Fanning’s close shave with a South African shark, let’s celebrate Melbourne teen Feliks Zemdegs, who almost – but didn’t quite – topple Pennsylvania’s Collin Burns’ Rubik’s Cube record.

Zemdegs, 19, managed to unravel that dastardly cube in 5.695 seconds; good enough to take his second title at the Rubik’s Cube World Championships Finals, but not enough to take Burns’ world record of 5.25 seconds.

Do you know the difference between 5.695 seconds and 5.25 seconds? No, you don’t, because regular human fingers can’t move fast enough on a stopwatch to mark the difference. (Though Zemdegs and Burns could probably pull it off.)

Still, Feliks doesn’t seem to be too perturbed by the loss.

“Because I won last time, I was less nervous this time - because I had already won one,” Zemdegs told media shortly after the victory.
