No Biggie, But An Aussie Teacher Has Been Named One Of The Ten Best Educators In The World

Yo, teach!

A primary school science teacher from WA has - no biggie – been declared one of the world’s ten best educators.

By whom? Oh, just Stephen Hawking.

Richard Johnson of Rostrata Primary School is now in the running for the Global Teacher Prize and its $1 million prize, awarded by the Varkey Foundation, of which Hawking is a supporter.

According to Perth Now, the Global Teacher Prize is considered the “Nobel prize of teaching” and will be handed out in March, at a ceremony in Dubai.

Kevin Spacey is on the judging panel, just FYI.

Johnson was announced as having made the Top 50 shortlist back in December, from more than 8000 submissions.

He was recognised for having developed the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths laboratory at Rostrata Primary School.

Initially founded on a STEM budget of $1500, it is now considered an international model armed with 3D printers, 3D pens and robotics, not to mention an “augmented reality sandbox”.

Varkey Foundation founder, Sunny Varkey, had this to say of Johnson:

“I hope his story will inspire those looking to enter the teaching profession and also shine a powerful spotlight on the incredible work teachers do all over Australia and throughout the world every day.”
