Meet The World's Best Teacher (And Newly-Minted Millionaire), Hanan Al Hroub

Remember when Aussie teacher Richard Johnson of Rostrata Primary School in WA was named one of the ten best educators in the world, and almost scored a million dollars for his troubles?

Well, he didn't get that money. But it's hard to argue with the recently announced winner of the 2016 Global Teacher Prize: Hanan Al Hroub, of Samiha Khalil Secondary School in Palestine.

Having grown up in a refugee camp, Hanan began working in primary education after her children witnessed - and were traumatised by - a shooting incident. In the years since, she has driven a "No To Violence" campaign and, as the Global Teacher Prize website explains, created a safe space for students, leading to a decline in violent behaviour in schools.

She is also now a millionaire. Check out video of her being named the prize winner below. It is delightful.

The award was announced by the Pope - via video message - at a ceremony in Dubai over the weekend.

Hroub was selected by a judging panel - which included, for some reason, Kevin Spacey - as the best educator from more than 8000 submissions. The contenders were narrowed down to 50 in December and a Top 10 (including Johnson) just last month. Her prize money is awarded by the Varkey Foundation.
