Aussie Sisters Cate And Bronte Campbell Miss Out On Medals In 100m Freestyle

Not all Olympic fairy-tales have happy endings.
Aussie sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell faced off against one another in the 100m freestyle this morning, both with decent chances of taking the gold.
And yet, it was heartbreak for the Campbell household, with neither managing to medal, ABC News reports.
Cate, the current world record holder in the 100m, placed sixth, while Bronte, who earned gold at the 2015 World Championships over Cate, managed fourth.
Simone Manuel of the U.S. and Penny Oleksiak of Canada tied for first place, both managing an Olympic record time of 52.70 seconds. Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom took bronze.
This marks the first tie for a swimming gold medal since Sydney in 2000 (when Anthony Ervin and Gary Hall Jr. did so in the 50m freestyle).
Manuel also became the first African-American to win gold in an individual swimming event with her performance.
Australia’s gold medal tally remains at five, while the United States proceeds to sixteen, breaking away from second place China, on eleven.
Still plenty more Olympics to come – and more from the Campbells too. They’ll both get a chance at redemption in the 50m freestyle on August 14. Perhaps they can pull an Ervin and Hall Jr. and tie for first place.
