Remember: An ATAR Isn't the Only Way to Get into Uni

Here’s what school doesn’t tell you.
This article is presented in partnership with ECU.
Sometimes it can feel like your ATAR score will make or break your future. And if you’re not completing ATAR subjects at school, you might think uni is totally off the cards for you.

But if you’ve got your eyes on a uni course, there are other pathways to it!
We’ve broken down four different entry options you can consider at ECU. There’s something to suit you and your individual journey to university—so go for it!

If you didn’t get a high enough ATAR score or don’t have one—try University Preparation courses.
ECU offers UniPrep courses that are open to school leavers, and free.
The courses will give you the skills you need to become eligible for entry into a degree. Plus, you’ll get heaps of insight to life at ECU and tons of career advice.

The course includes a full semester course and two intensive courses, so you’ll be fully prepped by the end.
If you don’t have an ATAR but love art and design—try the Creative Arts Portfolio Entry.
You might have collected a portfolio over the years of your artwork, graphic design, or creative writing. Even assessments at school could count.
If you’re interested in pursuing a creative arts or design discipline at ECU, you can complete an application with your digital portfolio and attend an interview.
If you’ve completed WACE and meet English competency requirements—try Experience Based Entry.
Even without an ATAR, or a low score, as long as you completed WACE and passed English requirements you can prove your ability through other means.
ECU can assess your ability to succeed in higher education based on a portfolio you provide.

Things to include in your application include a letter outlining your career goals, a resume, academic records and referees. You can read more here.
If you’ve started or completed a VET course—try entering with a Diploma or Cert IV qualification.
VET courses are a great way to gain entry to university.
If you’ve completed a Diploma, Advanced Diploma, or a Cert IV (depending on other factors) you might be eligible to go straight into an undergraduate course.
Don’t brush off uni as an impossibility. There are so many ways for you to pursue your dream degree, whether or not that pathway is a straight line.
