Amy Schumer Says “Enough Is Enough” And Pushes For Gun Control In America

Amy Schumer has teamed up with her second-cousin, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, to push for gun control in America.

It follows the recent shooting at a Louisiana cinema screening her comedy Trainwreck, in which two women were killed and nine more patrons were injured.

Speaking at a press conference in New York, the trailblazing comedian told media, “These are my first public comments on the issue of gun violence, but I promise you they will not be my last.”

"I've thought about these victims each day since the tragedy,” Schumer said as she tearfully paid tribute to the late Jillian Johnson and Mayci Breaux.

“People say, 'Well, you're never going to be able to stop crazy people from doing crazy things,' but they're wrong. There is a way to stop them."

The legislation being proposed by Sen. Schumer would introduce a monetary incentive for states that provide more information from background checks to federal databases, limiting the ability for those with criminal records or a history of mental illness to purchase firearms. States that do not provide such information would be penalised.

Amy Schumer also used the press conference to discuss the theory that gunman John Russell Houser had been motivated by misogyny by targeting her film specifically.

“I got about a million emails from friends telling me, 'It could have been any movie,' and I'm trying to believe that. But I'm not sure," she said.

"I think the idea of women's equality making anyone upset is not anything I'll ever understand."

Depressingly, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has a stranglehold on US Congress, and are expected to fight the proposed legislation.

At least the Schumers are ready to fight back.

“I’ll handle [the backlash] the way I’ve handled it the last ten years,” Amy Schumer added.

“I’ve had death threats and a lot of hate directed toward me. But I’m someone who—I want to be proud of the way I’m living, and what I stand for. So there was no question.”
