Almandin Takes Home This Year's Melbourne Cup

Almandin has won the 2017 Melbourne Cup in a nail biting finish.

Across the nation people held their breaths as Almandin crossed the finish line in first place, trumping crowd favourites: Heartbreak City and Hartnell.

It's the second Melbourne Cup victory for jockey Kerrin McEvoy and fifth win for owner Lloyd Williams.

"It's just a dream... How lucky am I?" McEvoy said.

"I love these stages. I love the Melbourne Cup."

Thousands of people flocked to Flemington for the 156th running of the race, while countless more watched on screens.

There have been no reports so far of injured horses.
