"Tomb Raider" Twist: Alicia Vikander - Not Daisy Ridley - Is Our New Lara Croft

White smoke has emerged from the MGM lot, indicating that we finally have our new Lara Croft.

According to THR, Oscar-winning Swede Alicia Vikander has signed on to play the titular Tomb Raider in an upcoming reboot of the film franchise (based on the video game of the same name).

Though Daisy Ridley (aka Rey from The Force Awakens) was considered the frontrunner for the role, producers simply couldn’t resist the omnipresent Vikander, who must have worn them down with her uniformly excellent 2015 performances in Ex-Machina and The Danish Girl (not to mention her sweet, PJ-clad dance moves in The Man from U.N.C.L.E ).

This new take on Tomb Raider will reportedly focus on “a young and untested Croft” as she embarks on her first adventure. It’s set to be directed by the incredibly-named Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug.

MGM will co-produce the flick with Warner Bros.

Before Tomb Raider, you’ll be able to check out Vikander’s action bona fides in Jason Bourne.

Though the rising Ridley would have been welcome in the role, you can't argue against Vikander's casting. Incredibly talented - with some not-yet-fully exploited comic chops to boot - she should at least make this new take on Tomb Raider something that the old ones weren't: watchable.

Earlier this year, Vikander received the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for The Danish Girl.

Everything's coming up Alicia.
