Tony Abbott Allegedly Gets Headbutted by a SSM Campaigner Who Pretended He Wanted to Shake His Hand

While walking through the streets of Hobart, Tony Abbott was allegedly headbutted by a marriage equality campaigner.

Tony Abbott was walking in Hobart when a man allegedly approached him asking for a handshake and then proceeded to headbutt him.

Abbott explained to reporters this morning that he knows the man is a marriage equality campaigner because he saw him wearing a "Vote Yes" badge. After the alleged headbutt, he ran away saying that Abbott deserved to be hit.

"It's a shock to have a fellow Australian seeking to shake your hand turn a handshake into an assault," Abbott told reporters, explaining that while he only received a swollen lip, the action was completely unacceptable.

He went on to say that he was disappointed that the violence came from a campaign based on love and suggested that most of the "ugliness" of the marriage equality debate has come from those supporting it.

Earlier this week, Kevin Rudd's godson was allegedly assaulted by a man for defending "Yes" campaigners. Something Abbott may have forgotten about.

Both sides of the campaign have come out condemning the assault stating that it's not in the spirit of the debate.

But some people feel like the story is a bit fishy without any proof that the alleged assaulter was from the "Yes" campaign.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this pans out.
