"A Mood" and "Unapologetic": Why Teens Are So Obsessed With Billie Eilish

Turns out, you like that Billie Eilish is "not afraid to get a bit weird."

Until her recent debut release, Billie Eilish was the best-kept secret for millions (perhaps even billions) of teens across the world. But if you were to ask anyone above the age of 21, the reaction might be a few head scratches and some "I've heard the name" responses.

Still, among teens, 17-year-old Eilish has managed to captivate with her spooky aesthetic and her lyric's macabre themes. She even topped the ARIA Charts this weekend.

But, it got us thinking: Why is Billie Eilish so popular among young people?

Of course, we already know she's oozing with talent and steeze but so are many other artists who haven't managed to muster up even half her fanbase.

Stumped, we thought: Who better to turn to than those who listen to her the most?

We asked Student Edge members how they first heard Billie Eilish, if they listen to similar artists or if she's a unique addition to their listening habits, as well as the big question: Why do you love her? 

She does her own stunts.

"She is honestly such a mood, she acts so relatable and down to earth, like any other teen," Billie from Victoria explains, adding that Eilish even does her own stunts.

"She actually put a live spider in her mouth and had black tubes coming out her eyes for the ["when the party's over"] video."

Her lyrics are relatable.

Aside from pulling her own stunts, members seemed to feel like they could relate to her due to her young age and her music's dark themes.

"I love her as a person and an artist and to a certain extent, I can relate to her because she is part of my generation and she knows my struggles," Kaiden from NSW explains.

Similarly, Haarsini from Western Australia likes the way she is able "put the emotions we all have into words."

"We all have a dark side to us, when we are going to hard times for some people that side may overpower for others it may not," Haarsini believes.

"I like her aesthetics and unique way of approaching pop music."

Sarah from ACT loves that "she's not afraid to tackle the topics and thoughts we all have but are too scared to say."

Her edgy aesthetic.

It's not just her lyrics and sound that's captivating young fans. Shantae from NSW believes her aesthetic cannot be overlooked.

"Her visuals are more eye-catching art than glitz and glam and has really connected with audiences, like myself, who are looking for something different," Shantae says.

"I am so infatuated with Billie because her music blends what’s fun about pop with what is edgy about the alternative scene into amazing productions."

David from NSW reckons "she's unique, not afraid to get a bit weird and that makes her stand out from other artists on the music platform" while Bouket from NSW echoes that she's "comfortable in her skin and unapologetic."

Her voice.

Eilish's voice was a big factor for many young fans too.

"Her voice is very angelic and beautiful," Shalini from NSW admits.

"Her music is just so different in a creepy, mysterious and very peculiar."

Lilian from NSW even admits she got emotional when she first heard Eilish's voice on "when the party's over".

"When it came out I listened to it all night, I cried to it and smiled to it," Lilian admits.

"It is just such a delicate, beautifully sung, song that means so much to me."

But, whatever your reason for loving Billie Eilish is, it's undeniable that she's fast on her way to being the music industry's most successful teen.
