2018's Hero: 9YO Fought to Overturn Archaic Ban on Snowball Fights (and Won)

Dane is the hero we need, but don't deserve.
There are many injustices in the world but when you're nine years old in a snowy region of the United States, not being allowed to have a legal snowball fight is pretty much all that's on the plate.
That's why Dane Best, a young boy from a town in northern Colorado, decided to start his political lobbying career very young.
His town, Severance, has held a 98-year-old ban on snowball fights. According to AP News, the town had a law making it illegal to throw or shoot stones or missiles at someone with the intention of hurting them.
Snowballs, according to the town's mayor, fall under the category of "missiles".
Dane was frustrated that kids were left with the option of breaking the law or leaving the town's limits to throw a snowball during the winter season.
"I think it's an outdated law," Dane told AP News.
"I want to be able to throw a snowball without getting in trouble."
So, at a town board meeting, Dane presented his arguments against the antiquated law and the board unanimously voted to oust it. Snowballs can now be legally thrown in Severance.

Dane and his family have apparently looked into the town's other quirky laws and found that pets are only defined as "cats" and "dogs", making his guinea pig pet illegal. Perhaps, he's eyeing his next campaign.
While many of us in Australia can't relate to the idea of snowball fights, last week thousands of Australian students fought to force the government into action over climate change, showing you're never too young to make a change.
2018 has been a rough year for many but stars, like Dane, can't shine without the darkness.
