"13 Reasons Why" Has Officially Been Renewed for S3 Amid Ross Butler Controversy

Butler is named in a lawsuit alleging his involvement in an attempted murder conspiracy.

Netflix isn’t dragging their heels, announcing a third season renewal for 13 Reasons Why less than a month after Season 2’s debut.

The show will return in 2019 to answer any lingering questions you may have. And to answer your first one, yes, there will be 13 new episodes.

Netflix made it official with an announcement video, which you can watch below.

Previously, star Katherine Langford sort-of confirmed Season 3 when she took to Instagram to announce her character, Hannah Baker, would no longer be a part of the show.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has defended the series renewal, given all the controversy. (Aussie Schools have issued warnings, while a parents group in America has called for its cancellation.)

"13 Reasons Why has been enormously popular and successful. It’s engaging content," Hastings told shareholders in an annual meeting, Deadline reports.

"It is controversial. But nobody has to watch it."

The program is facing an off-screen controversy too, with one of its stars—Ross Butler—involved in a bizarre lawsuit that alleges he was involved in an attempted murder conspiracy. (Butler plays Zach in 13 Reasons Why.)

Isaiah Silva is suing Courtney Love (the mother of his ex-wife, Frances Bean Cobain), claiming she arranged for men to break into his house in June of 2016, to steal back a guitar that belonged to the late Kurt Cobain.

According to Billboard, Silva's lawsuit names Love’s manager, Sam Lutfi, Butler (Love's close friend) and chauffeur Yan Yukhtman, alleging they broke in, pretending to be police, in a supposed plan "to commit a home invasion, kidnap Silva, murder him, make it appear to be a suicide and recover the guitar".

Love has told MTV Australia the lawsuit is “baseless and nonsense”. A source close to the family also told Billboard: "Frances and the family are prepared to fight with a fury of unprecedented legal force and they will prevail."
