10 Memes About the Ever Given Blocking the Suez Canal That Are Keeping Us Afloat

They're ferry funny, trust.

Last week, we watched the internet stop and laugh at a massive freight ship as it became stuck in one of the world’s most heavily used shipping lanes, causing maritime and global chaos for about six days.

Finally, the Ever Given container ship has been removed from the canal but social media hasn’t forgotten.

So, not only are we going to explain how this all went down, but we’re also going to supply you with some quality memes as well.

You’re welcome.

What actually happened?

In case you’ve been living under a rock, on 23 March the freighter was sailing into the Egyptian city of Suez when it got stuck about six kilometres away from the Suez Canal’s southern entrance. So, it essentially wedged itself into both sides of the canal and completely blocked the single lane waterway

Initially it was thought that even though the Ever Given is a chonki boi, it was pushed into the sides of the canal by the high winds from a sandstorm. But according to an ongoing investigation by the BBC, it may actually be ‘cos of a technical or human error.

Just blocking the canal could have been the end to a pretty funny story, but because the Suez Canal is one of the most popular shipping routes in the world, this pretty quickly caused global havoc.

Within just a few days at least 360 ships were waiting behind the Ever Given to get into the canal, with another 300 expected in the next few weeks, so getting the ship out became pretty damn important.

Thankfully, on Monday, the 220,000 tonne ship was set free by digging and tug boats that pushed and pulled it back to the centre of the waterway, finally allowing for other traffic to come through.

Now, it's time to have a laugh.
