The Five Most Iconic Uni Lunches – Ranked

The Five Most Iconic Uni Lunches – Ranked

Chicken katsu is GOATed, don’t come @ me.

Getting to the halfway point in the semester, there’s always a desire to ‘spice things up’, to make life a bit more interesting – one key area for improvement is always the uni lunch.

Campuses everywhere have countless options – and I often get to the point where if I have one more ham and cheese sandwich, I’m gonna cry.

So here’s the top five uni lunch choices, ranked.

5. The BYO Lunch – 4/10.

Sure, it’s smart. It’s cheaper. It’s better for you.

But it’s just not nearly as exciting as the rest of the items on this list.

Homemade sandwiches and salads, pre-packaged meals and leftover dinners just don’t do it for me.

At the start of semester it’s fine, but as the weeks continue, I’m looking for something with a bit more zing, something that’s a bit more electrifying.

In comes the bought lunch.

4. The Burger and Chips – 6/10.

It’s one of the quintessential lunches. It might look a little low on this list, but compared to its opposition, it just can’t compete.

There’s usually a few options for burgers on uni campuses – from cafés, food trucks, local fast food joints and the humble delivery, you’re usually guaranteed to have a burger within an arms length at uni.

You could argue that the burger goes higher on this list – but with burgers, comes inconsistency -there’s no rhyme or reason to the way a burger’s made these ways, and it really hurts the burger's rankings.

That being said, I’m always keen for a burg.

3. The Noodle Box – 8/10.

Versatile. Affordable. Transportable. Humble.

All these words (and more) can be used to describe on of the longstanding kings of the uni lunch – the noodle box.

Pick your noodles, pick your fillings and pick your sauce – the noodle box has something for everyone.

Honestly, for a lot of people, the noodle box is going at number one – and we’re all for it.

BUT, just wait till you see the next two items on the list.

2. The HSP – 9/10.

Whether you know it as the snackbox, the HSP, the Halal Snack Pack or the meatbox – lots of us know and appreciate the HSP.

Of course there’s debate on what meat to pick, which sauces to use and the question over whether cheese belongs.

But, all in all, the HSP is a heavy hitter on the uni lunch menu – if you’re on campus, there’s a local kebab shop not far away.

Should this go at number one? Maybe, I’ll think about it after I come out of my snackbox-induced nap.

1. The Chicken Katsu Don – 10/10.

You had to know this is where we’d end up, right?

The undisputed champion of the uni lunch just has to be Chicken Katsu Don.

Teriyaki may come and go, sushi is always an option, but the stalwart and the GOAT of all lunches (at least in my humble opinion) is the Chicken Katsu Don.

Breaded chicken, rice, veggies, it’s just wins all round.
