Our Students
UWA teaching students are called pre-service teachers, and they are involved in real-life teaching throughout their degrees. Many units involve activities off-campus in places such as museums, galleries, Kings Park and local schools, and coursework and theory are closely connected with programs that make a genuine difference in the lives of children and young people. For example, as part of their studies our pre-service teachers design and conduct tailored teaching interventions to support children in literacy, numeracy, science or the arts.
UWA pre-service teachers have hands-on experience with key learning technologies and learn from staff who are at the forefront of education research internationally. Our partnerships with schools across Western Australia means that our pre-service teachers also have access to a range of practicum placements in government and non-government schools in the Perth metro area as well as in rural locations.
UWA teaching graduates enter the teaching profession with experience and confidence, and the skills and insights that will help them thrive in the classroom and be a positive force in the community.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What are the prerequisites for studying teaching at UWA?
You need to have a three-year bachelor’s degree from a recognised university, and, in the case of international students, an IELTS score of 7.5 with no band lower than 7.0 and a score of no less than 8.0 in speaking and listening. - What is happening with the Graduate Diploma of Education?
The Grad Dip Ed is being phased out nationally as part of a move to improve teaching standards Australia-wide. Although UWA will continue to offer the Grad Dip Ed until 2017, we recommend that in this transition period people who want to become teachers consider enrolling in one of the Master of Teaching courses instead. - What are the benefits of doing a Master of Teaching degree at UWA?
Doing an undergraduate degree in a subject you are passionate about before enrolling in a postgraduate teaching course means you get to go into the classroom with greater expertise in your specialist subjects. There are also many reasons why the UWA MTeach specifically is an exceptionally good teaching programme:
- UWA MTeach students complete 75 days on practicum placement, well above the minimum 60 required for teacher registration.
- UWA MTeach students work in small classes, which gives them greater opportunities for collaboration with lecturers, tutors and peers.
- UWA MTeach students learn from teaching staff with expertise in both research and teaching.
- UWA MTeach students complete original research projects, and graduate with the critical literacy to incorporate up-to-date pedagogical research into their teaching practice.
