Born on the Gold Coast in 1973, Billabong has since become synonymous with surfing culture and a coastal lifestyle spirited by the thrill of chasing the perfect wave. The brand’s namesake is derived from the Wiradjuri word ‘bilabaŋ’, translating to ‘creek that runs only during the rainy season’—a phrase that captures the transient nature of the never-ending search for a surfing utopia. Living by the mantras ‘Life’s Better in Boardshorts’ and ‘A Bikini Kinda Life’, Billabong focuses its ethos as a brand to not only surf or swim in, but to experience life in.

From humble beginnings, Billabong has risen to prominence over the past 50 years with founder Gordon Merchant, a surfer and surfboard maker who originally designed boardshorts on the kitchen table and sold them in local surf shops. Merchant was driven by the desire for durable garments that would withstand the unforgiving exposure to the salt, sun and sand while staying true to a surfing culture aesthetic.
