Here’s why you should read the news.

It’s an easy way to stay informed.

It’s great to stay ahead of the curve.

We know it sounds cliché, but it is good to have some awareness as to what’s going on around the world. It means you’re better equipped to understanding and discussing topics that might actually help you in your future career.

Even if you’re not studying something that is in mainstream news, it’s always useful to stay in the know in regards to news within your field.

For example, if you’re studying accounting, you can stay in the loop with any relevant accounting, finance, or business news.

Or if you work in medicine in public health, reading the news could keep you up to date on what's going on in other medical centres or hospitals near you, and across the country. 

Helps critical thinking.

Not everyone loves critical thinking…but it is a useful skill. Reading the news can help you digest and understand complicated texts a bit easier.

This is especially a useful skill in a future job you might have where you could be asked to analyse reports, surveys or findings.

Improves your communication skills.

If reading isn’t your strong suit, reading the news is one of the best ways to develop those skills.

A good way to start is to read about current affairs you already have some understanding of. That way developing those skills will be a breeze!

Helps you prepare for the future.

You never know, but you could find out about future job opportunities by reading the news. Think industry placements, internships, events or even just announcements from companies you may want to work with.
