What to do When You Get Your ATAR Results

What do my results mean and what’s next?
The big moment is here, your ATAR results are in.
Whether your score exceeded your expectations, was what you hoped for, or a little lower than you thought, one thing’s for sure, you’ve made it through high school, and that’s something to celebrate.
Your ATAR is just one part of the picture, and it doesn’t define your future.
There are plenty of options ahead, and what matters most is how you use the results to plan for your next steps.

It’s ok to feel disappointed.
If your results didn’t quite match your expectations, it’s totally normal to feel down .
You’ve worked hard, and it can be tough when the outcome doesn’t align with what you see for your future.
Remember, your ATAR doesn’t measure your worth or dictate your entire future.
Take some time to reflect, but don’t let disappointment stop you from exploring your options.
University.
For some people, university is their goal after high school. ATAR is one of the most common ways to get into a university degree.
If your ATAR matches or exceeds the entry requirements for your preferred university and course, you can apply once offers open.
Be sure to check the course requirements, offer dates and location to make sure it is a match for you.
If university is still your dream, there are many ways to get there, even if your ATAR score didn’t meet the entry requirements for your desired course such as bridging courses and special consideration and adjustment programs.
TAFE.
If uni isn’t for you, or if you’re looking for a more practical, hands-on learning experience, TAFE could be a great fit for you.
TAFE offers a wide range of vocational education and training (VET) courses that teach practical, industry-specific skills.
Many TAFE courses are designed to give you the technical and hands-on experience needed for specific industries.
TAFE is great for apprenticeships and traineeships in fields like plumbing, electrical work, carpentry and hairdressing, but also offer a wide variety of courses like nursing, media, aged care and hospitality.
Courses like these prepare you for entry-level and specialised roles that are in high demand.
Many TAFE programs also include work placements, so you can gain experience while studying.
Take a gap year.
Taking a gap year can be a great option if you want to take some time to think about your next steps.
You won’t fall behind on this year off, it’s a great opportunity to work, travel, volunteer and think.
A gap year can give you a fresh perspective on what you really want to do next, whether that’s going to university or going into the workforce.
Whether you head to university, start a TAFE course, take a gap year, or go straight into work, remember that your future is full of endless possibilities.
