What It’s Really Like Being a VET Student

A VET student fills us in from the frontlines.

For those who don’t know, the VET (or Vocational Education and Training) program is an initiative that allows students to complete a certificate and gain some work experience while still in school.

Being a VET student can be a lot of fun, as it allows you leave class and spend time in workplaces, but it can also be overwhelming, as you have less time to complete schoolwork.

I chose to take on the VET program, as I hoped it would allow me to experience a slice of what life will be like once I finish school. It has also allowed me to gain knowledge in many different types of jobs, with placements in many different fields, such as the media and events industries.

When I first started, I personally found it hard to come out of my shell and talk to people in fear that I would be treated differently due to my school age. However, I was proven wrong and have been taught many things by my supervisors, which I will be able to take with me when I leave school at the end of this year.

Many people assume the VET program is easy, as you do three days of school as well as one day each of work experience and TAFE. Personally, I can tell you that it is a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it, as it helps you grow as a person and shows you what it is like to work in a field that you are interested in. There are a lot of places the VET program can take you. The industries I’ve mentioned were specific to my post-high school goals, but there are way more out there.

During my time in the program I have met new people and made many friends at TAFE who have similar aspirations to me. The program has also helped me learn how to achieve goals such as writing published articles (like this one!) or create activities for family events. It has also helped me learn skills such as transcribing videos and working with camera equipment.

If you decide this is the path for you, I think you’ll have fun and discover a bit more about the world around you. Maybe you will even learn something new.
