What is E-Waste and How Can We Reduce It?

There’s estimated to be almost 16 billion mobile devices in the world right now😲

This article is presented in partnership with Logitech.

If you’ve heard the term ‘e-waste’ before but you’re not sure what it means, don’t worry – you’re not the only one!

E-waste is discarded electronic devices and it’s the fastest growing solid waste sector. With the rate we’re all buying new tech these days, it’s predicted
the 2014 figure for e-waste will double by 2030.

Tech companies are obviously the main producers of electronic devices, so we’ve partnered with Logitech to give you a rundown on their sustainable approach to combat e-waste and how we can all reduce it!

Re-use and repair electronic devices before getting a new one.

The number one thing you can do to reduce e-waste is to simply not buy more electronics if you don’t have to.

There are plenty of repair shops and even DIY hacks online which can not only save you a couple hundred dollars, but the environment, too!

Of course, there comes a point where your old electronics just may not be up to scratch. So, here’s some options for you.

Buy from an environmentally friendly and sustainable brand.

Lots of tech brands are now labelling their products so you can easily identify which boxes they tick.

Logitech gaming products have ‘carbon transparency’ labels. This allows customers to consider environmental impact before purchasing anything – it’s not just the price or the features that matter!

Logitech is also all about designing for sustainability. That means using lower impact materials and designing products made to last.

Dispose of your e-waste properly.

If you’re buying electronics that have been made with post-consumer recycled plastic, and have recycled packaging, these will recycle extra well.

More than 65% of the mice and keyboards in Logitech’s largest product portfolio are now made with recycled plastic. This equates to saving an estimated 19,000 metric tons of CO2. You can read more about post-consumer recycled plastic here.

Plus, Logitech has a great resource for locating global recycling centres here!

Extend the life of your electronics.

How is this possible, you may ask?

There’s a lot of factors which could shorten or lengthen the life of your electronic devices, depending on what you do.

This includes having a case for your phone to protect it from falls and shatters, keeping your device clean and away from water, and not overcharging the battery!

Invest in devices with multiple functions so you don’t have to buy extras.

The MX Master 3 Advanced Wireless Mouse by Logitech has pretty much every feature imaginable. Decked out with a gesture button, thumb wheel, and things you haven’t even heard of, you won’t need any complementary devices to get your work done.

Now, you’re all set to tackle e-waste! You can read more about Logitech’s commitments on their website here and check out their Master Series too.
