What Are the New Instagram Safety Features Your Parents Could Be Using?

Is it more safety or snoopy? 👁️

Instagram and other social media apps face a fair amount of backlash for causing negative effects on their younger users—so they’ve made some changes.

New features on Instagram allow your parents to monitor your social media activity—if both parties mutually agree.

Parents can check how much time you spend scrolling on Instagram (yikes) and set time limits.

They also have access to see who you follow, and who is following you (which is already possible if an account is public). Weekly reports will show them these new connections.

Plus, if you report an account or a piece of content, they’ll receive a notification about it. You can choose to leave notes to your parents on why the report was made, in an effort to start healthy conversations that seem to be lacking among families.

We took to Instagram polls to see what y’all reckon and it seems parent supervision isn’t the most appealing concept.

Meta is also planning to introduce resources to the report feature, with links to anti-bullying, mental health and eating disorder information.

Instagram’s ‘Take A Break’ nudge will also be expanded so that if you’re spending a lot of time looking at similar content on the Explore page, you’ll be prompted to look elsewhere.

How do we feel about the Big Brother-ification of Instagram?
