Get Your Uni Career Started With UWA’s Experience-Based Entry

Kickstart your career in 2023.
This article is presented in partnership with UWA.
With 2023 underway, it’s time to start thinking about your year and what it’s gonna look like.
Maybe you’re considering getting your uni career kickstarted, but might be worried you won’t get into uni.

You might not have an ATAR or the ATAR you wanted, or you might be starting uni later in life. While a lot of people starting uni are going through the traditional ATAR route, that's not the only option.
WA’s top university, The University of Western Australia (UWA) has just announced a brand-new experience-based entry program that recognises how all levels of learning and life experience can prepare you for uni.

How do I know if I’m eligible?
If you’re not sure whether you’re eligible for experience-based entry – UWA’s got a pretty handy tool for you.
They’ve launched an eligibility checker tool which is able to tell you whether you’re eligible for experience-based entry.

You’ll have to show some evidence of your previous experience, but the eligibility checker is a quick and easy way to get started.

All the evidence you provide will be given a specific score on a points system, and your cumulative points will go on to determine your eligibility for your chosen course.
Even if you’re not sure if you’re eligible for experience-based entry, UWA has other pathways available, and they can help you get started on your journey to uni.
What can I study?
With experience-based entry, you have a huuge range of choices of what to study.
Degrees available include:
- Bachelor of Arts.
- Bachelor of Biomedical Science.
- Bachelor of Business.
- Bachelor of Commerce.
- Bachelor of Environmental Design.
- Bachelor of Science.
Under each of those, there’s countless majors to choose, from Aboriginal health and wellbeing to zoology and everything in between.

If you’re keen on a specialised course like engineering or criminology and criminal justice, there’s a pathway for that too – all you need to do is get started in one of the Bachelor’s degrees above and then transfer to your new degree once you’ve met UWA’s transfer requirements.
How can I apply?
Applications are still open for Semester 1, 2023.
You can get your application going just by heading to the UWA website, where you’ll find the application portal, and helpful tools like frequently asked questions, the eligibility checker and options for support from UWA.
When you submit your application, you’ll need to provide evidence of your experience, such as:
- Completed Certificates II to IV or an incomplete Diploma.
- Completed ATAR and ATAR subjects.
- Completed general subjects.
- Completed high school or other awards.
- Extracurricular awards or certificates.
- Life achievements and commitments (including sport, music and volunteering).
- Work experience (résumé).
- Education references.
Visit UWA’s website to find out more about experience-based entry and your pathway to uni.
