There’s so much to think about when you’re trying to decide where to study, but with our list of things to keep in mind, you won’t be overwhelmed. We promise.
Every uni is different and knowing which one is right for you can be super tough. But thankfully, there’s a few things you can think about when making your preferences.

How does it stack up to other unis?
With so many unis to choose from, it can be hard to know how they compare, and which one is gonna suit you.
Thankfully, there are some professionals out there doing all the hard work for you.
There are a bunch of different organisations that rank universities around the world, so take a look to see how your favourites stack up in different categories.
For example, RMIT sits in the top 200 universities worldwide in the QS World University rankings and is 22nd globally in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.
One metric to keep an eye on is how many graduates get employed from certain unis. After all, you want to land that perfect job after graduating.
RMIT leads in that category, sitting at number one in Australia for their graduate employment rate.

You can also look at how your university stacks up in the specific study area you want to go into.
Let’s say you’re interested in design – you could go to the RMIT website, and see that RMIT is ranked 15th in the world for design, and is number 1 in Australia.
So, check out uni rankings when making your preferences, and have a look to see if each one is a good choice for you.
Where’s my campus? And is there a choice?
Universities can be pretty diverse, going from sprawling open campuses, to regional hubs, to buildings tucked away in the heart of a big city.
Some people love open air and green spaces, meanwhile others thrive on having close access to restaurants, cafés and other local haunts – and RMIT can offer a few choices.
With three campuses across Melbourne, there’s something for everyone.
Can't make it to campus? Luckily, you can also do a virtual tour from wherever you are.
The Melbourne City campus is in the beating heart of the city, with close access to cafés and restaurants.
Meanwhile the Brunswick campus offers more open space and it’s located in the hipster capital of Australia.
There’s also the Bundoora campus, a stone’s throw from open spaces and local suburbs, meaning there really is a lot of choices out there.
What are the facilities like?
Do you like studying collaboratively? Or are you more of a lone wolf?

Luckily, there’s plenty of options around for studying and much more.
When thinking about a uni, have a look at their offerings and think about how that’s gonna suit your needs.
You might be interested in creative study spaces, research facilities or sporting complexes.
There’s also amenities suited for your needs, like parking, alternative transport, religious spaces, childcare and more.

By knowing what’s on offer before you head to uni, you’re gonna improve your overall experience.
What else is on offer?
Uni is not just about studying – there’s so much more to do.
Most unis offer countless clubs and societies for you to join.
These can range from subject specific societies like The Law Students Society or ones based around fun activities like the Funkadelics Dance Club.
RMIT has over 100 different clubs and societies, so there’s bound to be a group of likeminded people you can join up with.

So - make sure you research your uni before applying! It allows you to make the most of your degree and tailor the kind of fun you’ll have during your study.
