Twins Compete Head-To-Head In the Final Round of a Spelling Bee

Two brothers, who just so happen to be twins, were at the epicenter of an epic spelling bee battle.

Eswar and Sankar Ramamurthy, twin brothers from Nebraska, went head-to-head in the LPS Spelling Bee. The fierce spellers had made it through 58 words, before 12-year-old Eswar was eventually declared the official winner. Hooray!

Bet you’re wondering what the winning word was…

It was “Farfalle”. You know, the cute little bowtie shaped pasta?

“We have farfalle pasta all the time,” Eswar told the Lincoln Star Journal. Gaining elite spelling skills by means of osmosis, I reckon.

It wasn’t an easy comp, by any means. The brothers were up against 60 other fifth to eighth graders. Spelling bee coordinator Lynna Gene Cook said, “Spelling is not a sport; it’s a different kind of skill.”

The final four students had to spell words like; “nautilus,” “aquarelle” and “drollery.” Going to safely assume there are many adults who wouldn’t even know how to spell those words, let alone use them in a sentence.

You know what they say about sibling rivalry? That it’s definitely a thing, yeah? Well, these two spent an hour going back and forth over 58 different words before they reached “farfalle.”

A whole hour.

The two say they studied together, which made the whole journey a bit more fun. “Some of the words were in video games we play,” shared Sankar. “Not all of them, but it’s our excuse to play.”

Clever.

Eswar’s now heading to Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

“I’m going to go home and do homework and then the celebration starts Sunday,” he said.
