Becoming a senator at 21 is GOAT behaviour

If you’ve ever felt like you had to wait until you were older to become a politician, spoiler alert: you don’t have to.

And Charlotte Walker from South Australia has gone and defied those expectations.

The new Labor Senator from South Australia celebrated her 21st birthday on election night and simultaneously became the youngest Australian to be elected to the Senate.

So, who is Charlotte?

Meet one of the Senators for SA.

Before she became an elected senator, she was the President of Young Labor in SA and was working at the Australian Services Union.

What makes her achievement even bigger is that she was preselected in what has been reported as an ‘usually unwinnable third spot’ on the SA Labor ticket.

Some of the issues she spoke about during campaigning were lowering HECS debts and the cost-of-living.

She was also on social media campaigning in videos with Skog the bear (aka the IKEA bear) and playing Minecraft.

On Monday she told the ABC she wanted to bring her point of view to parliament.

"Having a young person actually there in caucus meetings and in parliament, is sort of going to bring a different perspective," she said.

"None of the sitting members know what it is to be 21 right now — but I do, because I am living through that."

Is she the youngest person in parliament?

Previously the youngest person to be elected in parliament was Liberal member Wyatt Roy who was 20 in 2010 when he became a member of the lower house in 2010.

Before Charlotte was elected, the youngest member elected to the upper house was Jordon Steele-John from the Greens who was elected at 23 years old in 2017.

It goes to show that no matter how old you are, you can chase whatever you want.
