Turns Out "Spider-Man" Is Staying in The Marvel Cinematic Universe After All

He ain’t leaving.

In August, we reported that Marvel's right to include Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe had been taken away, following a dispute over the profit-sharing arrangement between Sony and Disney. Sony still wanted to make Spider-Man movies, but Marvel’s Kevin Feige wouldn’t be the head creative any longer.

That meant no more Spidey in the MCU, and understandably, fans were heartbroken. There were even petitions demanding the hero’s return.

It seems our tears were wasted, however, because it turns out Tom Holland’s hero will remain in the MCU after all.

As detailed by The Hollywood Reporter, the studios have struck a deal that will see Marvel produce the third film in the Spider-Man: Homecoming series for Sony, which is set to be released on 16 July 2021.

Holland will return as the wall-crawling hero, while Jon Watts, the filmmaker behind the last two Spidey films, is tipped to direct.

Marvel Studios co-president Kevin Feige said in a statement, "Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse, you never know what surprises the future might hold."

Fans have let out a collective sigh of relief.

Tom Holland announced the news on Instagram in typical Tom Holland style, posting this iconic scene of Leonardo DiCaprio from The Wolf of Wall Street.

(Bad language ahoy.)

Zendaya also jumped on the bandwagon.

Not all terms of the deal have been revealed, but we know Spider-Man will appear in a future Marvel movie as part of the arrangement. It also allows Marvel to retain creative control over its most popular character.

So, rest assured knowing Spider-Man is exactly where he should be.
