New TikTok Docuseries, "TransAthletica" To Tackle Transgender Issues in Sport

"Trans people don't just deserve the right to play sport, we deserve the opportunity to win."

Yesterday was International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia—an important day to celebrate the LGBTIQ+ community across the world.

It was also the day we were served some very exciting news about an upcoming docuseries exploring the barriers transgender people face in sport in Australia.

TransAthletica is a 15-part series being filmed as we speak in Sydney, featuring the voices of leading trans athletes and activists. And it's set to be released in June, exclusively on TikTok of all places.

It will follow the story of host, co-writer and former Victorian state badminton player, Rudy Jean Rigg, as he asks questions like how do we define a person's gender? What determines a 'normal' amount of hormones? How can we change sport systems to be less gendered?

"I want TransAthletica to help show people the immense amount of challenges that transgender and gender diverse people face in sport, how a simple answer to inclusion may not be the best one and, ultimately, drive home the fact that trans people don't just deserve the right to play sport, we deserve the opportunity to win," Rudy said.

Trans athletes have had more visibility this year than ever before. Sport is the new frontier of trans rights as age-old sporting codes wrestle with the notions of gender and equality.

Director, Hannah McElhinney, described the series as "important" to expanding our understanding of the unique, complex issues trans people face in sport.

"Transgender athletes are so often told by the media they have an ‘unfair advantage’, yet face more unfairness on their road to complete than most other athletes," she said.

You can find them on TikTok, Insta or Snapchat teaching their audiences of more than half a million people about queer and trans history in the most fun and engaging way of course. And their content might get us all through until TransAthletica is released exclusively on TikTok in June.

We. Cannot. Wait.
