The Truth About Relationships: Three Pairs of Besties Get Wholesome for Palentine's Day

 Relationships & Identity
Celebrate your mates this 14th of February.

In the month of choccies and roses it can be easy to succumb to feelings of loneliness. But in the wise words of our fave rom com, “love actually is all around!”

This Valentine’s Day you can celebrate more than just the romantic relationships in your life. When was the last time you told your best mate how much they mean to you?

For our February series all about relationships, we chatted to three pairs of besties about how they met and what they love about each other… And it was wholesome, to say the least.

“To be honest, I didn’t really like her until, like, Year 8.”

Annelise and Issy are both in agreement that their first impressions of each other weren’t particularly great. And despite becoming “inseparable” since then, they continue to poke fun at their friendship.

There’s a kind of tongue-in-cheek, bantery chemistry that the pair of Year 12 girls share. They both described the nature of their relationship as “chaos”.

“We are very different people in terms of what we like…activity-wise it’s just like city trips and, like, just ranting half the time,” Issy told us.

Annelise continued, “most of our relationship is honestly complaining about the universe.”

But it goes a lot deeper than they first let on. The girls have both been steady sources of support for each other throughout family issues and stressful times at school. “Issy’s just been there the entire time…just being with each other comforts me,” Annelise said.

As they follow each other into university in 2023, the girls look set to stay as close as ever. “It took 17 years to find (this friendship), but here it is,” Annelise said.

"He seemed similar to me because we were both into the same kind of things."

It’s easy to feel the energy bouncing between these two as they chat about music, anime… And Luke’s new hat.

Their friendship revolves around common interests and witty remarks that send the pair into a scuffle of laughter every minute or so. Jack wasn’t wrong when he said “sense of humour is a big one” in their dynamic.

“It’s usually just us chilling while our friendship group is doing dumb (stuff) and we’re just like, laughing at them,” Luke said.

They’ve helped each other through mental health struggles and difficult weeks by hanging out together. Simply being around each other will make the Year 12 boys feel better in an instant.

"If we're not married by 40, we're moving to the UK together."

With Bela in Perth and Andrew in Melbourne, these two haven’t seen each other in person for almost two years.

“Andrew used to live a couple of streets behind me and now he’s a couple of state borders over,” Bela laughed, but then noted it hasn’t had any negative impact on the strength of their friendship.

The pair shared their hilarious first impressions of each other, in which Andrew perceived Bela’s slight discomfort at a party as being “up herself”. Now he’ll pick up her calls in the middle of the night when she needs a friend to talk to.

Describing their friendship as “chaotic and understanding”, they fluctuate from small digs at each other to being in emotional synchronicity.

After saying his favourite thing about Bela, Andrew quipped “that’s the last nice thing you’ll hear from me.”

But it’s evident that underneath the jokes, Andrew, Bela, Jack, Luke, Annelise and Issy all share deep respect and care for one another. Make sure you tell someone in your life how much they mean to you this 14 February.
