Theresa May To Become UK's First Female PM Since Margaret Thatcher

Britain is gearing up to welcome its first female prime minister since Margaret Thatcher, with Theresa May set to take over from outgoing PM David Cameron, ABC News reports.

Cameron announced his plan to resign shortly after the result of the ‘Brexit’ referendum returned a ‘Leave’ vote, indicating that the next Prime Minister would lead the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union.

You can tell he’s relieved to not have to be the one to deliver ‘Article 50’ (the ‘no taksies-backsies’ exit trigger) from this video of him humming happily after welcoming May’s selection as Tory party leader.

Theresa May, the 59-year-old Home Secretary, became the only contender to fill the Conservative Party’s leadership vacuum after her last remaining rival, Andrea Leadsom, exited (brexited?) the race yesterday. (Leadsom left following the controversy surrounding her claim that, as a mother, she’d be more qualified than the childless May.)

Though May is a Euroskeptic, she was on the side of the “Remain” camp during the referendum.

Outside of Parliament, she spoke about her plans once taking over as Prime Minister.

"Brexit means Brexit and we are going to make a success of it,” she said.

"We need a strong, new positive vision for the future of our country. A vision of a country that works not for the privileged few, but that works for every one of us."

Meanwhile, the leadership struggle within the opposition Labour party continues, with its governing National Executive Committee meeting today to decide whether or not Jeremy Corbyn will automatically be on the ballot, or if he needs to score the nominations of 51 MPs (a tall order).
