The Matildas Had the Most Wholesome Reaction to the Women’s World Cup Bid Win

The FIFA Women's World Cup is heading down under.

Fans and players across the country rejoiced earlier this morning after it was announced that Australia and New Zealand have won the bid to co-host the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2023. 

As reported by the ABC, the trans-Tasman bid beat Colombia by 22 votes to 13 at the FIFA Council meeting in Zurich early this morning.

The Sydney Opera house and Auckland's Sky Tower were lit up to celebrate. 

While Australia and New Zealand had also previously competed with Japan and Brazil for the bid, those other nations both pulled out in recent days. 

It will be the first co-confederation-hosted FIFA World Cup, and the first FIFA Women's World Cup to be held in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Matildas had gathered with officials at the Football Federation Australia offices to watch the announcement live. 

Understandably, they were absolutely ecstatic. In fact, their reaction is probably the most heartwarming thing you'll see today.

Afterwards, Matildas captain Samantha Kerr tweeted "Me right now," featuring a video of her doing a backflip.

Football Ferns skipper Ali Riley also posted an emotional selfie to Twitter, writing "I will never forget this moment." 

Australia had planned to bid for the 2023 tournament alone, before joining forces with New Zealand to officially submit a joint bid in December 2019.

The bid win means that the Matildas and the Football Ferns will not be required to win qualifying matches and are automatically through to the opening round.

It'll also be larger than previous tournaments, with the number of teams expanding from 24 to 32.

The tournament will take place in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Newcastle and Launceston in Australia.

Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, and Dunedin will host the New Zealand fixtures alongside Auckland. 

Auckland's Eden Park is expected to host the opening game, while the final will probably be held at Stadium Australia in Sydney.
