The Best Ways to Find a School Holiday Job

Coming into the school holidays, an increasing number of students will be applying for jobs to help them pass the time and earn some money.

As a student in Year 9, applying for a job during the holidays is something I’m immensely interested in. Although, when it comes to identifying, explaining and analysing the best ways of actually finding a job, there are almost too many methods to mention. However, I am writing this to assist those who are interested in finding a school holiday job, specifically, and in turn, making their holidays a more enjoyable and beneficial time than your usual break from the classroom.

Look for the Signs (Literally):

When it comes to finding retail work at a shopping centre, it is common to spot a sign at the front of a store stating their desire to hire new employees. This is your best indication that the store in question is ready to hire some staff (and you'd be better off applying here than somewhere without a sign). When browsing your local shopping centre for these signs, be sure to bring some resumes (or CVs) to hand out when the opportunity strikes. (Build your resume with Student Edge here.)

Search Online:

Another great method of finding a job is by making use of job search websites, be it Seek, LinkedIn or even Student Edge. Some job search websites allow you to filter your searches based on type of job; salary; location; whether it’s full-time, part-time or casual; and so on. This method is extremely useful and easy to use.

Suss Out Your Family and Friends:

A job opportunity could be closer than you realise. Yet another good way of finding a job during the holidays is by asking those around you if anybody needs work, or networking with people who are part of companies or stores you’re interested in. By having a connection with somebody who is already associated with the given job increases your likelihood of getting an interview. This is a good place to start if you’re having trouble finding a school holiday job.

Ask Someone to Give You a Referral:

My final suggested method of finding a school holiday job is by getting a referral. Have you worked prior to this school holiday job (maybe for free, during work experience, or on a voluntary basis)? If so, ask someone you worked for or with to write you a letter of reference that can help your CV stand out. This will give your potential employers a good idea of how you work and is likely to boost your chances at getting your desired job.
