Thank You Progressive Emojis For Trying To Make The World A Better Place (Even If Only Slightly)

We have to hand it to the emoji-makers at Unicode for constantly upping their diversity game.

It seems like with each emoji update, we're gifted with more diverse representations of the world we live in. Take, for instance, the added option to change skin tones, or their suite of LGBTQI-friendly emojis.

Next year, we'll see the inclusion of headscarf and breast-feeding emojis.

According to the BBC, inspiration behind the headscarf emoji came from Rayouf Alhumedhi, a Saudi teenager living in Germany.

Ever wondered how to pitch ideas for new emojis? Well, Alhumedhi sent through a proposal to the Unicode Consortium, a not-for-profit corporation that reviews and develops new emojis. Her idea was backed by the co-founder of Reddit, Alexis Ohania.

Alhumedhi shared that during a group chat with her friends on social media, she realised there was no emoji to represent her, a headscarf-wearing woman.

"There are so many Muslim women in this world who wear the headscarf. It might seem trivial... but it's different when you see yourself on the keyboard around the world," she said.

Gizmodo reports that the proposal for a breastfeeding emoji made note of the fact "three million mothers participate in the activity of breastfeeding in the United States at any given time." It also comes at a time when Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, called a breastfeeding mother "disgusting."

"In this day and age, representation is extremely important," expressed Alhumedhi.

"People want to be acknowledged... and recognised, especially in the tech world... Emojis are everywhere."

The entire list of new emojis will be finalised by mid-2017 alongside Unicode version 10.0, according to Emojipedia.
