Student Given Go-Ahead By Teacher To Dress As Hitler For Book Week

What. Is. Happening?

Several weeks ago, a Perth school came under fire for naming a child who attended Book Week in blackface as ‘Best Dressed’.

(Never mind the fact that, by posing as West Coast Eagles footballer Nic Naitanui, the boy was seriously flaunting the limits of a 'book'...)

Now, ABC News reports that a private school in Alice Springs selected a student dressed as Hitler (yes, the Hitler you’re thinking of) for their own ‘Best Dressed’ parade.

The principal of St. Philip’s College, Roger Herbert, told the ABC he regretted the decision to laud the child dressed as Adolf Hitler, especially considering a group of exchange students from a Jewish school in Melbourne were in attendance that day.

"We got them together and apologised and they were fantastic, absolutely fantastic, and accepting," he said.

Herbert also revealed a teacher had approved the student’s proposed outfit, prior to their arrival in costume.

"Now she is absolutely shattered that she said that, and I'm really concerned about her wellbeing."

The principal of Bialik College – from whence the visiting students came – told the ABC he accepted the apology, calling it a “learning opportunity”.

It echoes Nic Nat’s own thoughtful response to that other Book Week controversy.

Next year, can we recommend Alice in Wonderland, or maybe Atticus Finch, or Harry Potter? There are almost too many other acceptable alternatives.
