Stop Answering Unknown International Callers, It's Probably a Scam

If you know it's not family or friends, don't answer it.

In the age of the internet, many would probably rate themselves in the 'expert' range for identifying scams.

"Win $50,000 just by clicking here!" Scam. "You've just been selected for an all-expenses trip to Europe!! Don't hesitate!" Scam. "Congratulations, you've just been chosen to meet Beyoncé!" Prooooobably a scam.

But, did you know that not all scams are conducted through the internet? Le horror!

In fact, the most common form of scamming is via phone calls. You'd be forgiven for thinking phone call scams were left in the '90s and early '00s (where they rightfully belong), but unfortunately, they amount to 40 per cent of the scams that happen in Australia.

In particular, one scam recently has seen Australians receive missed phone calls from international numbers. According to The Hack, the scam works when an Australian calls the number back, which incurs huge fees that they receive a percentage of.

So, unless you know the number that is calling you, it's best for them to leave a message or message you rather than answering it. If you do answer it, hang up immediately and report it to Scamwatch. It'll save you some serious dollars.
