Should We Watch The Melbourne Cup?

Upon reading this writing challenge question, I wondered: How do I feel about the Melbourne Cup?

While part of me loves the fizz and fascinators that comes with the spectacle, my celebratory get-up has been somewhat hampered in recent years since learning of the “dark side” of the event.

As an animal-friendly individual, I do struggle to get past the stress the horses may endure for this event. I know not all horses are mistreated and I understand it is “the name of the game”, as some people may suggest; however, it does play on my conscience somewhat while I’m sitting in front of the track or TV screen, champers in-hand and fascinator adorned, that perhaps the horses aren’t exactly loving the experience.

It’s a hard decision to come by as it does make one feel quintessentially un-Australian to declare they find the Melbourne Cup a little outdated. The excitement of the race is certainly contagious and the betting that goes with it is just a bit of fun (for most people), but when you hear horrors of stress so severe that horses have a heart attack from the event, or that some are euthanised post-race, one must consider how their actions help support something that isn’t entirely ethical.

I understand for every point I’ve made there are a hundred to counter it. This is why, ultimately, it comes down to personal opinion; your worldview and your ethical standards should dictate whether or not you watch.

Personally, I can no longer endorse the event. Yes, I often have to attend a luncheon or event as to not appear a “stick in the mud” or because I have to for work, but I don’t bet and I don’t indulge in anything that requires me promoting the whole thing.

It is just difficult in today’s society to escape it without coming across like a raging activist and ruining it for everyone else. So what’s the modern day answer? I have no idea! I do not possess the credentials to suggest alternatives, although I’m pretty sure most animal rights groups would suggest canning it altogether.

I’m still hoping we can find a healthy alternative that lands squarely in the middle and can help to continue an Aussie tradition while maintaining the safety of its animal participants.

So, while I don’t believe we should watch the Melbourne Cup, until further notice I guess we all will. Here’s to hoping…
