Scoot Scoot: Sydney and Melbourne Are Getting an Electric Scooter Sharing Service

Sydney and Melbourne are about to get scooter squads.

Despite the flaming hot dumpster fire that was bike sharing services that tried (and have since failed) in Australia's capital cities, it appears ride-sharing services are far from over.

Enter Bolt by Taxify, the latest idea to get city-slickers from one location to the next.

It's essentially the same as other bike sharing services that have been introduced to Sydney-siders and Melburnians, but with one major difference: Electric scooters.

Unlike other services, these electric scooters won't be left to their own devices once you're finished your ride. Taxify has announced they'll be collecting the scooters every evening for maintenance and recharging.

Markus Villig, Taxify's CEO and co-founder, said the introduction of the electric scooters will be perfect for those who only need to travel a short distance.

"One in five Taxify rides are less than 3km, which is the perfect distance to cover with an electric scooter," Villig said in a statement.

"It's likely that some of our ride-hailing customers will now opt for scooters for shorter distances, but we'll also attract a whole new group of customers with different needs. This means we'll be able to help more people with their daily transportation problems."

There's no word of a launch date in Sydney or Melbourne as of yet, but it's being released in European cities in the coming weeks, so next year seems most likely. Brisbane and Gold Coast are also in their sights so they, too, might get to feel the wind in their hair.

Time to level-up those rusty scooter skills again.
