Remember That Couple Who Said They Would Divorce if Aus Got Marriage Equality? They Lied

Of course they backed out.

Way back in 2015, a couple from the ACT announced that they would divorce, after decades together, if Australia legalised same-sex marriage. It was such an outlandish statement by Nick and Sarah Jensen that it inspired huge divorce parties and plenty of memes.

Despite the Jensens representing a black hole where happiness goes to die, a lawyer had even offered to help them on their way to conscious de-coupling, which he admitted would be incredibly hard with their reasoning.

And now, in December of 2017, the moment had arrived. Or so we thought.

Nick Jensen told the Daily Mail he never wanted to divorce his wife if it happened, just the State.

"The legislation currently makes it untenable for us to do this under the law," Jensen admitted. "The point we were highlighting and that still stands, however, is the fact that a redefinition of marriage changes the agreement under which we were originally married."

And so became the realisation that the Jensens will now have to share marriage with same-sex couples because we're supposed to be living in an equal and non-discriminatory society. Boo for them.

"We will be making no further comment," the couple's statement finished and never have eight words made me let out a huge sigh of relief before.

Same-sex marriage was signed into law earlier this morning by the Governor General. In Australia, engaged couples need to give a month's notice of their intent to marry meaning that the earliest same-sex marriages will be held from Tuesday 9 January.

It's a good time to be alive.
