PSA: Here's How You Can Get a Free Personalised Back to School Haircut

Time to chop the mop?

We all know the back to school season is a super stressful time.

After all, getting ready to head back to study isn’t just about making sure you have all the pens and pencils to burst your backpack, it’s also about feeling and looking fresh and confident.

That’s why Cluey Learning, an online tutoring support service, is giving away 1000 free back to school haircuts in partnership with Just Cuts to raise awareness for personalised learning and how students need more of it, especially in their schoolwork.

In a survey of over 1000 people in December 2020, Cluey Learning found that 85 per cent of parents agreed that their children’s clothing and accessories reflected their personalities. On top of that, 93 per cent of parents claim to buy toys and games that appeal to their child’s personal interests and 86 per cent admit their children only participate in extra-curricular activities that are of interest to them.

However, despite this personalised approach to the lifestyles of young people, it seems that parents don’t believe this applies to the way our current educational system works in Australia.

In fact, 77 per cent agreed that it’s a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, while 88 per cent felt their child could do with more individualised attention at school. Plus, a whopping 90 per cent agreed that kids need additional learning support.

This was across the board representing parents of school children from kindergarten all the way up to Year 12, so it impacts all young people.

Chief Learning Officer at Cluey Learning Dr. Selina Samuels tells Student Edge how important it is that young people receive a personalised approach to their learning.

"What our studies have shown—both in research we’ve done and our own experience—is that [young people] really benefit from that degree of personalisation, which enables them to both feel that their needs are being met, but also to actually meet their learning needs," she says.

Cluey Learning bridges this gap between classroom learning and the need for a personalised approach. They offer students live, face-to-face tutoring support in a one-to-one and small group setting.

"So, there is a general concern amongst parents that the kids aren’t getting the full support that they need, and I would imagine that that’s partly because they’re having a lot of conversations with their children and hearing from the kids that they need more support," Dr. Samuels says.

"There’s a limitation to what a school can do when you’ve got 25 – 30 kids in a classroom. Teachers find it difficult to accommodate those individual needs.

"I think it’s important for parents to be aware of that, and to make sure kids are getting the support that they need, and equally, for students and particularly for young adults, to recognise that they may not be getting the support they need."
