President Trump Ends Separation of Children from Families at US-Mexico Border

A resolution (we hope) to one of the year’s most harrowing tales.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has signed an executive order to immediately end the separation of families at the US-Mexico border.

His decision comes after weeks of heavy scrutiny and criticism for the inhumane treatment of immigrant children, many of whom were taken from their parents upon their arrival in the United States and detained in cages.

President Trump spoke while signing the executive order, stressing that his goal was to "[keep] families together while at the same time making sure that we have a very powerful, very strong border", the ABC reports.

He also told reporters he expects Congress to match his order with a new law.

"We will have that as the same time we have compassion… I'll be signing something in a little while that's going to do that."

President Trump had spent the past few weeks criticising the opposing Democratic Party for his family separation policy, saying they’re not helping Republicans pass "good immigration legislation".

However, the 'zero tolerance' policy was always the directive of Trump's government and never needed legislation to see it put to an end. It came under fire from not only numerous celebrities and the actual Pope, but also all living First Ladies, including Melania Trump.

There remain concerns that the more than 2,300 children separated from their families in the last month alone will face difficulty being reunited with their parents.
