Peak Hour New York Train Derails Injuring More Than 100 Commuters

A crowded rush hour New York City train derailed at downtown Brooklyn on Wednesday morning, injuring more than 100 commuters; it’s the second major rail accident since last September.

Reuters reports emergency crews piled into Atlantic Terminal after the Long Island Rail Road train fell off the tracks at 8:20 a.m. local time.

Deputy Assistant Chief Dan Donoghue said none of the injuries are life-threatening, but at least 11 people were sent to the hospital. There were between 600 and 700 people on the train.

The train, travelling at a fairly slow speed, had failed to stop on time. It struck a bumping block, causing it to derail.

Most of the damage was copped by the front two cars of the six-carriage train. The station’s bumping block and partitions also suffered some damages.

Passengers implicated said the blood and chaos following the derailment was frightening. “There were people crying,” said Aaron Neufeld. “I saw some bloody faces.”

Neufeld described the incident as passengers being knocked on top of one another amidst shattering glass windows. “Bags went flying,” he said. “People were thrown to the ground.”

No major service disruptions occurred for other Long Island Rail Road lines at the terminal, and crews were working to restore service by the evening rush hour.

The Long Island Rail Road is the United State’s largest commuter rail system, with more than 330,000 passengers riding it per day.
