Our New Hero: Florida School Shooting Survivor Emma Gonzalez Gives an Electrifying Speech

Emma's speech articulated what every student in the United States must be feeling.
After the recent school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, one of America's deadliest mass shootings, students from the school have joined a united front to demand change surrounding gun ownership.
Despite many great interviews from the recent survivors advocating for change, a moving seven-minute speech from 15-year-old Emma Gonzalez has caught the eye of many around the world after going viral.

Emma addressed a crowd at an anti-gun rally calling "BS" on the useless consolations from those who have the power to change laws.
"Every single person up here today, all these people should be home grieving," Emma began.
"But instead we are up here standing together because if all our government and President can do is send thoughts and prayers, then it's time for victims to be the change that we need to see."
Emma used the speech to inspire the crowd to make the recent shooting the last one in U.S. history.
"We are going to be the kids you read about in textbooks," Emma said.
"Not because we're going to be another statistic about mass shooting in America, but because, just as David said, we are going to be the last mass shooting."
Emma then divided the victims into monetary figures. Specifically, she divided the $US30 million in campaign funding that Trump received from the National Rifle Association (NRA) by each victim of gun violence in 2018.
"Divided by the number of gunshot victims in the United States in the one and one-half months in 2018 alone, that comes out to being $5,800," Emma explained.
"Is that how much these people are worth to you, Trump?"
She then called "BS" on other politicians who receive funding from the NRA, the notion that good people with guns stop bad people with guns and that guns are as dangerous as cars or knives.
There's a lot wrong with the United States right now but if Emma's speech is enough to stir action around the country, then there might be light at the end of the tunnel after all.
