NSW Might Criminalise Revenge Porn, Which Could Mean Jail For Up to Three Years

A new bill in NSW might mean that perpetrators who share explicit images of someone else without their consent could be jailed.

The bill would see a maximum jail sentence of three years and fines of up to $11,000.

Mark Speakman, NSW attorney general, explained that the bill will finally give victims a chance to see their perpetrators receive harsh penalties.

“This bill will empower victims and provide them with the legal right to ensure that perpetrators can no longer get away with such disgraceful behaviour,” Speakman said.

Also included in the new bill is the criminalisation of threatening to record or distribute someone's explicit image without their consent.

It's important to note, however, that it will not be criminalised between two consenting adults.

"Behaviour between consenting parties will not be criminalised," Speakman explained. "Instead, victims will be enabled to take a stand against privacy abuse."

Buzzfeed News has revealed that, according to the eSafety Commissioner, revenge porn complaints have increased from 24 to 335 in the last nine months.
