Several Dead And Many Injured After A Truck Plows Through Christmas Market In Berlin

A truck has crashed into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin, resulting in the tragic death of many and several others injured.

Sky News reports around 50 other people are thought to be injured. Early indications suggest the incident was a coordinated attack.

Berlin police have confirmed one person has been detained; they are suspected to be the driver of the truck. Another occupant of the truck was found dead at the scene.

The Australian Embassy in Berlin is making urgent inquiries to determine whether any Australians have been affected, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Australia’s ambassador to Germany, Lynette Wood, tweeted some words of solidarity.

Witnesses say the incident was no accident, as the truck showed no indication of slowing down. It’s said the truck veered into the market when crowds were at a peak.

Emma Rushton, a witness to the carnage, told Sky News the truck was going at 40 miles an hour (64km/h). “There was no way it could have come off the road and it showed no signs of slowing down,” she explained.

Ambulances and medical crew are on the scene treating those who are injured, and German police are urging Berliners to ‘stay at home’. Nearby hotels have been put on lock-down.

The tragedy has evoked memories of the attack in Nice. Earlier this year, a truck drove through a crowd in the French city, killing 86 people.
