Netflix Has Officially Renewed "Sex Education" For a Third Season

Prepare for awkwardness.

In news that should surprise absolutely no one, Netflix has renewed their teen dramedy Sex Education for a third season.

Given how Season 2 ended, it was expected that the show would be back for Season 3. However, it's always a relief to receive official confirmation.

Netflix announced the news overnight on their See What's Next Twitter account, with everyone's favourite mum/sex therapist also posting her, uh, own version of the announcement.

Earlier today, the streaming service took it a step further by uploading a short video of Alistair Petrie, who portrays Principal Groff, walking through a Moordale High art exhibition, providing commentary on portraits of each of the characters.

It ends with the surprise revelation: Sex Education is returning for S3.

*Spoilers for Season 2 below.*

If, for some reason, you haven't got around to watching Sex Education Season 2, you should probably get your priorities straight. We're about to reveal some juicy spoilers below, so tread carefully.

In the S2 finale, Otis (Asa Butterfield) finally told Maeve (Emma Mackey) that he loves her, after behaving rather poorly towards her the entire season, particularly at his house party in Episode 6. Only, he did it over voice message because she was on television at the time.

It was the moment we've been anticipating for two full seasons. Except, Maeve never received the message because her neighbour Isaac (George Robinson)

At this stage, no plot details have been released, but we'd like to hope we'll see some sort of resolution for Maeve and Otis in S3. While we're not sure when the new season will drop, it's likely that we can expect it some time during 2021.

There's also a chance that the series won't end with S3. Series creator Laurie Nunn told The Hollywood Reporter that she thinks the show's characters have "got legs" and that Sex Education could run for several more seasons.

"I think I could do some more with them if we're given the chance," she said.

"[Netflix] is very supportive and really wanting us to tell the stories that we feel passionate about. It really feels like we're all on the same page, wanting to make the same show."

You can stream Sex Education on Netflix.
