The Most Exciting Thing About 2017? My First Job

A member shares their excitement about finally getting a job.

A job seems so thrilling, especially to a ninth-grader like me.

I'm not talking about getting your weekly pocket money for chores or assisting with a paper round. I'm talking about the excitement and nervousness of a paying job with approximately 15 hours of work each week.

I am talking about writing a resume and sounding as professional as you possibly can; applying online; waiting for a response anxiously; being turned down or being asked to come in and bring your papes; receiving an interview and carefully choosing your answers. To me, it all just seems very exhilarating.

My first job as a teenager—whether it be at Woolworths, McDonald's, a newspaper agency or whatever—I am sure will be a memory to hang onto. It isn't always going to be rainbows and sunshine, but I will remember it forever.

The stress of smiling despite annoying customers; the heart-warming interactions with regulars; asking if they want to use savings or credit. I can just imagine walking into the workplace, my second home, feeling fresh with a new uniform, a tightly pulled back bun or ponytail and a big smile.

Just think about working with new or old friends and working really hard for a pay rise. Or maybe just working really hard because you want to put in that extra effort.

The small details are what complete a job; things such as receiving your bank card so you can be paid and going out with your friends with actual money. I can be confident and independent by using public transport and coming to work early. I can start saving up money for my future and use it later for university, travelling, buying or renting a place to stay and many more perks.

The prospect of being promoted to a bigger role is electrifying too. I can envision the proud looks of my family and friends as I successfully get a job or the supportive comments from them as I keep applying for one.

In 2017, I will persevere. In 2017, I will have determination. In 2017, I will endure. And in 2017, I will have patience and receive my first job. Dear 2017, I am looking forward to you.
