Why I Think Modern Family Is TV's Best Show

We asked members what their favourite TV show - airing right now - is and why. This was our favourite response.

Modern Family is simply the greatest show on television right now, and I feel as though it will leave behind a legacy for many years - and even decades - after its final episode airs.

I’m sure many people will say shows such as Pretty Little Liars, The Vampire Diaries and The 100 are the best on television right now, simply because they are their favourite to watch. I will admit, these are fun shows because they are highly intense and always have new surprises when you least expect them. Having said that, I still strongly believe that Modern Family is the best show on television right now for the following reasons:

Firstly, it portrays various ‘types’ of modern families: a gay American couple with an adopted Vietnamese child; an older man married to a woman the same age as his daughter; the traditional “nuclear” family of a husband and wife with three kids. Modern Family does not discriminate or stereotype, which is a major issue that occurs in today’s society.

You might be asking, why is this show different and so unique compared to other shows on television right now? It conveys the notion that no matter how vast the differences between two people are, love and family are all we’ll ever really need. Also, whilst showing a comedic side to most situations (that you’ll probably find yourself in at some point in your life), you can almost always feel a genuine sense of emotion from the characters, whether it’s love, compassion, or concern.

Furthermore, it highlights the harsh, yet funny, realities of everyday situations. The writers of the show use a comic streak to maintain their comedic genre, whilst delivering some fairly meaningful messages in their plots. I find this reasonably cunning, because those making the show are aware that millions of people are tuning in, with a big portion of the viewers being teenagers. They use their popularity to portray messages that have a somewhat significant meaning. Therefore, they are not only entertaining, but also subconsciously educating their viewers, through the characters and storylines in each episode.

Conclusively, I believe Modern Family is quite frankly the best show on television right now, thanks to its diversity, originality, comedic yet purposeful plots and for the way it delves into everyday circumstances that we all face, therefore making it incredibly relatable.
