Fan theory #1: Moana is the ocean’s daughter.

A more speculative theory says that Moana isn’t just a human but actually the daughter of a Māori goddess named Tangaroa who is the goddess of the ocean. Parts of this theory argue the chief’s fierce protection of Moana from the sea stems from his knowledge of her heritage and her fate. Plus, the connection implies that Moana’s journey is not just a quest for identity but also a fulfilment of her destiny as a child of the ocean. Okay, this one is less out there but it still feels a bit vague to be true.

Fan theory #2: Moana’s divine heritage.

Another theory saying that Moana’s heritage isn’t human is the one that theorises she may be a descendant of Te Fiti, the goddess of life. This theory says that Moana’s grandmother, Tala, could have connections to Te Fiti’s lineage which would explain her spiritual guidance and connection to the ocean. Fans speculate that this heritage could play a big role in Moana 2 and her journey, revealing her powers and responsibilities as a demigoddess. Sounds like Moana’s family tree might be more complicated than we first thought.

Fan theory #3: Moana died at the beginning of the movie in the storm and Maui is actually her guardian angel?!

This has been one of the most popular theories. It’s based on the scene where Moana gets knocked off her boat the first time she tries to sail past the reef in the first movie. She’s pushed off her boat by a massive wave and her foot gets stuck in a piece of coral under water. According to this theory, she washes ashore in Maui’s island which exists in a mythical realm separate from the living world. While it might be true, we think this one feels like a bit of a stretch.
