Melb United Almost Beat Russell Westbrook’s Oklahoma City Thunder in a NBA x NBL Crossover

There was just a single point in it for the ‘down underdogs’.
Burn your Blu-rays of Rocky, Cool Runnings, DodgeBall and Happy Gilmore: We have the only underdog story you’ll ever need below.
This morning, NBL team Melbourne United came within one point of beating the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, and NBA MVP Russell Westbrook, in a friendly match that was meant to be a blow-out.
In fact, when asked before the match what he was expecting from Melbourne, Russ replied, “I ain’t expecting s***.”
Well, by his exceptionally low expectations, he got more than he bargained for.
Melbourne United, missing one of their best players in Chris Goulding and suffering from jet-lag, still put the pressure on OKC and its new, high profile recruits, Carmelo Anthony and Paul George, leading in three quarters and failing in the final moments 86 – 85.
If they had managed a final bucket, they would have become the first Australian side to beat an NBA team, ever.
You can see how close they came to victory below.
Though OKC spared themselves an embarrassing loss, the NBL and Melbourne United players are proclaiming they’ve finally “arrived” on account of the impressive almost-victory.
Here’s hoping the Brisbane Bullets can triumph over the Phoenix Suns this weekend.
We now eagerly train our eyes on the Twitter account of Russ’ frenemy and former teammate, Kevin Durant, for some tea…
